Niklas Sivelöv was born in Skellefteå, Sweden in 1968 and started his career as an organist, winning awards and prizes throughout Scandinavia. At the age of 13 he turned his attention to the piano and studied at the Royal Academy of music in Stockholm, making his debut there in 1991, when he was the soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philarmonic Orchestra in Bartok´s Second Piano Concerto. He continued his studies in Helsinki, Bucharest and London, while winning prizes in Geneva and Cincinnati and in 1994 the Swedish Golden Apple award. In 1995 Niklas Sivelöv was Artist in Residence with the Swedish Radio. As a composer in his own right, Sivelöv won critical and public acclaim for the first performance of his Concerto Classico in Osnabruck in 1998, with himself as a soloist and Jean-Francois Monnard conducting. His second Piano Concerto for Piano and Strings was performed with great succes for the first time in October 2001 with The Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the composer as soloist. Niklas Sivelöv collaborates regularly with musicians such as, Leonid Gorokhov, Martin Fröst and Mark Peskanov, and has a wide repetoire, with concertos ranging from Beethoven to Lutoslawski and Ligeti, with piano concertos dedicated to him by contemporary Scandinavian composers such as Lars Ekström and Anders Eliasson. His recitals programmes often include composer such as: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Skrjabin, Debussy, Ginastera.a.o He has performed with conducters such as: Horia Andrescu, Kees Bakels, Paavo Berglund,Janos Furst, Okko Kamu, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Leif Segerstam, Kazufumi Yamashita, Alan Gilbert , Niklas Willen, Kristjan Jarvi, Thomas Dausgaard, Markus Lehtinen and Hannu Lintu. In September 1998 Niklas Sivelöv took up the post of assisting professor of piano at the Royal Danish Conservatory im Copenhagen. In July 2000 he made his London Debut, at the Wallace Collection, which led to immediate return engagements. The same year has also seen his debuts with the Prague Radio Symphony, recording the concerto by L. Ekström and the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich. He has given master classes in Spain, Finland and USA. For Naxos Niklas Sivelöv has recorded the Berwald Piano Concerto, wich was awarded a Diapason d’Or, and works for piano by Wilhelm Stenhammar and Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, wich were both awarded highest marks by the Penguin Record Guide and Einar Englund’s First Piano Concerto which was nominated in Cannes for best 20-century recording. He has also done recordings on Simax, Caprice, BIS and Phono Svecia. Two most recent cd:s released includes Argentinian music on label Sanctury Classics, which has received splendid press, and music of Polish composer Wlodek Gulgovski on Phono Svecia wich was nominated for swedish Grammy-award. During 2005 Niklas Sivelöv will perform concertos by Schönberg, Chopin and Mozart. in Sweden, and at Festivals in Bergen and Trondheim, Finland and Denmark. He is also to perform at The Barge Music Series in NY: 2 recitals with music of Haydn, Schumann, Högberg( The Ice Piano) and Ginastera and 2 Trio concerts with trios of Beethoven and Sivelov together with Mark Peskanov and Sophie Shao. Upcoming recording projects includes the 2 Stenhammar pianoconcertos on label Naxos and music of Schumann on label Altara. He is also in February 2006 to release a full CD of Skrjabin “Vers la flamme” on label Caprice including selection of Sonatas, Etudes and Preludes. On label Caprice there is also a release of his Suite para Marimba with Markus Leoson. BIS is also included in the release list with his work Tres Danzas played by Öystein Baadsvik. The last years has also been very succesful for Niklas Sivelöv as a composer with many performances worldwide, and for the moment he’s working on 2 commissions from swedish Kroumata Percussion Ensemble and a Concerto for 2 Pianos for himself and Peter Jablonski. |
